Offense Not Enough for Lobos in Loss to Utah State

LOGAN, Utah – The University of New Mexico softball team scored a run in the fourth and fifth innings but it wasn’t enough to take down Utah State in the series finale Sunday, falling 5-2. The Lobos are now 20-20 on the year and 6-9 in the Mountain West.

Utah State used four hits to score four runs in the second off Lobo starter Tess McPherson. Another run came for the Aggies in the fourth.

The Lobos got on the board in the four inning. Chelsea Johnson led the inning off with a single to left field. Jordan Gelfand came in to pinch run for Johnson. Gelfand later scored with two outs on Michala Erickson’s double to left field.

The Lobos put up another run in the fifth. With two outs, Cheyenne Smith hit a solo shot over the right field fence for her first career home run as a Lobo.

New Mexico left nine runners on base, including four in the final two innings. Lobos tried to keep the game alive in the seventh as Jasmine Casados drew a walk with two outs. Johnson followed with a single up the middle but the two were left there on a fielder’s choice that ended the game.

McPherson took the loss in the circle, dropping to 8-10 on the year. She allowed five runs, on just hits, while striking out three and walking three.  

At the plate, the Lobos outhit Utah State 9-5. Johnson and Erickson each had two hits. Erickson and C. Smith both finished with an RBI.

The Lobos will play at home for the first time in two and half weeks, hosting San Josè State April 28-30. All three games will stream on the Mountain West Network. Live stats will be available.
