RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – The University of New Mexico women’s golf team claimed 5th place for a second year in a row at the MW Championship at the Dinah Shore Tournament Course. After ending with a team’s overall score of 895 [287-304-304], the Lobos shot at total of 32 birdies and senior Manon Mollé led the team with 14 after the three rounds.
“Inconsistent play got us again,” said head coach Jill Trujillo.
The Lobos were tied for 1st place after the first round and Mollé was at the head of the pack as an individual after shooting 4-under-par 68. Tuesday was the start of the second round and the inconsistent wind led to a rough back-nine for the Lobos. UNM bumped down three spots on the leaderboard and was tied for 4th place with Fresno State. With Mollé still holding the individual lead after the first two rounds, the Lobos went into the third round with hopes of a top-3 finish.
“Manon played well today except for the two holes on the front side,” said Trujillo. “She hit a ball in the water on 6 and then OB on 7 which took the wind out of her sails a bit.”
The Lobo senior was leading the charge from day one but she suffered from a difficult round and finished her last conference tournament being tied for 4th with Elizabeth Prior from UNLV. Mollé closed out her tournament with a total of 2-under-par 214 [68-69-77] and led the field in birdies with 14.
Junior Ingrid Gutierrez had a consistent run throughout the tournament and finished in the top-20 being tied for 13th after scoring 7-over-par 223 [73-76-74]. Another Lobo senior, Eva Saulnier, finished her last conference tournament with a respectable score of 11-over-par 227 [72-80-75]. Junior Alexandra Moisand hit the green with a consistent stride in the first round but struggled through the rest of the tournament ending her three-rounds at 20-over-par 236 [74-79-78]. Closing out for the Lobos, sophomore Darian Zachek ended her second appearance at the MW Championship with an overall score of 21-over-par 237 [75-84-78].
Overall the Lobos shined these past three days and showed that they have been improving throughout this spring season.
In May, the UNM Championship Golf Course will be hosting the NCAA Regional from May 8th to May 10th.
