RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – The University of New Mexico women’s golf team moved three spots down the leaderboard and is tied for 4th place with Fresno State after the second round of the 2017 MW Championship.
“We didn’t hold it together very well on the back nine,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “The wind picked up and we took some big numbers.”
Despite moving down from being tied with San Diego State and UNLV for first place after the first round, senior Manon Mollé is still in the lead as an individual after shooting 3-under-par 69 on the day. In total, Mollé is 7-under-par 137 after the both days and is looking towards earning her second individual MW Championship title as a Lobo.
“Manon’s round was very consistent and she made some clutch birdies,” said Trujillo. “Her putting was spot on.”
Another consistent Lobo was junior, Ingrid Gutierrez who despite the wind shot 4-over-par 76 in the second round. Gutierrez is currently tied for 14th as an individual with four other athletes. Fellow junior, Alexandra Moisand closed out her second round with a score 7-over-par 79 and senior Eva Saulnier trailed just behind after shooting 8-over-par 80. Sophomore Darian Zachek struggled through the wind and closed out her round with a 12-over-par 84 on the day.
“Tomorrow’s round will need to be deep and we have 100% we can do it,” mentioned Trujillo.
The Lobos will be starting the final round of the MW Championship at the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at 8:30 a.m. [PT] to continue another 18-holes of play.
