ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Head Lobo men’s basketball coach Paul Weir is excited to announce the signing of Troy Simons for the 2017-18 University of New Mexico men’s basketball team.

“Troy brings a wealth of much-needed attributes to our program,” said Weir. “His shooting ability immediately helps chip away at one of our biggest areas of concern. His toughness also lends well to how hard and aggressive we want to play. This is an exciting first step in what I hope to be a truly exceptional recruiting class.”

Simons, a junior college transfer guard, commits to New Mexico from Polk State in Winter Haven, Fla. and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining. He was the national junior college scoring champion this past season, averaging 26.3 points per game over 26 games.

He shot 40.6 percent from the field and 40.9 percent from three-point range. The 6-foot-1 guard also finished the 2016-17 season with 2.4 assists per game and 5.5 rebounds per game. He was named First Team All-Suncoast Conference and earned a spot on the FCSAA/NJCAA Region VIII All-State Team. He will play in the 2017 NJCAA Men’s Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Game on April 29, 2017 in Las Vegas.

Simons is from Pittsburgh, Pa. and originally verbally committed to the University of Pittsburgh before signing a National Letter of Intent to play for New Mexico. He played his prep career at University High School in Pittsburgh.
