SAN DIEGO, Calif. – With only one hit through the first three innings, the University of New Mexico softball struggled to get offense going early, dropping the second game of the series 10-2 in five innings to San Diego State. The Lobos are now 19-17 on the year and 5-6 in the Mountain West.
The first hit of the game for the Lobos came from Jade Gray in the second. She tripled for the right field line, but the Lobos couldn’t capitalize on the situation as Gray was left at third.
SDSU was on the board early with a 2-0 lead in the first inning for the second straight game. They extended that lead to 6-0 in the second with four more runs. The Lobos made a pitching change, going from Jensen Main to Marissa Bethke.
Three more runs for the Aztecs came in the fourth, putting them up 9-0 and forcing the mercy rule on the Lobos.
The Lobos offense didn’t fully break open until their backs were against the wall in the fifth. SDSU went into the top of the fifth with a 9-0 lead but a two-out, two-RBI single from D’Andra DeFlora cut the Aztecs lead to 9-2.
San Diego State ended the game in the bottom half of the fifth with a RBI single with two outs.
Five errors also held the Lobos back on the day, the most errors they have had all season long.
At the plate, the Lobos ended up with four hits. Along with Gray, Michala Erickson, DeFlora and Franc each had a hit. DeFlora finished with a team-high two RBIs.
In the circle, Main took the loss, falling to 6-6 on the year. She allowed six runs, four earned, off seven hits, while striking out one. Bethke allowed four runs on four hits with one walk.
