SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of New Mexico softball team struggled to get offense going early, falling to San Diego State 4-1 on Thursday evening at the SDSU Softball Stadium. The Lobos are now 19-16 on the year and 5-5 in the Mountain West.

The Lobos offense had a hard time coming together off of San Diego State’s starter Erica Romero as they only had three hits through five innings.

Cheyenne Smith put together a single to left in the first inning. Chelsea Johnson singled to left in the fourth and Doris Smith tallied the third hit in the fifth, a single down the left field line.

Due to the lack of the Lobo offense, that allowed San Diego State to take advantage of their bats. SDSU started off the first inning with a two-run home run to take a 2-0 lead.

San Diego State added another run in the third and fifth innings, giving the Aztecs a 4-0.

But the Lobos responded and put together some offense off Romero, forcing SDSU to change pitchers in the sixth. The first three hitters reached base, which allowed Johnson to capitalize on the situation, sending a ball out to right center to score Franc on the sacrifice fly. That run cut the Aztecs lead to 4-1. But that was all the offense the rest of the game for UNM.

Following the four runs, McPherson kept the Aztecs off balance, keeping them to just four runs in her final inning. She suffered the loss on the night, falling to 8-8 on the season. Romero claimed the win, improving to 6-3 on the year.

At the plate, Cheyenne Smith picked up two of the Lobos five hits. Johnson, Doris Smith and Jasmine Casados each had a hit. Johnson finished with the only RBI of the night.

The Lobos will look to even the series Friday night at 6 p.m. PT/7 p.m. MT. The game will air on the Mountain West Network and live stats will be available on GoLobos.com.
