IRVING, TEXAS — The Lobo soccer success continues to roll as four Lobos have earned the 2017 Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal, the league announced Friday. Jason Beaulieu, Gabriel Camera, Matt Dorsey and Simon Spangenberg each earned the honor for their outstanding performance in the classroom.
The Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal is awarded only to those C-USA student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or better. Only 672 C-USA student-athletes earned the honor this year among all C-USA schools. The total number marks an increase of more than 11 percent from a year ago demonstrating an outstanding dedication to academics among the leagues’ schools.
Friday’s announcement comes just one day after twenty Lobos were named to the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll for achieving a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The academic recognition is not new for the four Lobos, who have excelled in the classroom since arriving at UNM. Beaulieu, who posted eight clean sheets and a 12-7-3 record in 2016, has been named C-USA All Academic, CoSIDA Academic All-District, C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and has previously earned the C-USA Academic Medal. He was also named to the prestigious CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team in 2016.
Camera has also tallied academic honors since his freshman season in 2014, earning C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll status. Dorsey has earned the C-USA Academic Medal and been named to the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll throughout his career. Spangenberg was also recognized as an elite student-athlete by the College Sports Information Directors Association in 2016, earning a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team.
Beaulieu, Camera, Dorsey, Spangenberg and the rest of the Lobos will return to action on Saturday, April 15 for their third of five spring contests. UNM will face Air Force at 12 p.m. MT at the Taos Sports Complex.
