ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – It’s going to be a big night inside WisePies Arena Saturday night as the University of New Mexico men’s basketball team will play host to San Diego State for Senior Night. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. and will air on CBS Sports Network (Comcast 274/838 HD, DISH 158, DirecTV 221). This game will determine the No. 5 and No. 6 seeds at the Mountain West Tournament next week in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Saturday will be a special night as the Lobos will honor four seniors in Obij Aget, Tim Williams, Devon Williams and manager Estevan Sandoval. The ceremony will take place at the conclusion of the game, so fans are encouraged to stick around and help celebrate the careers of the four seniors.
The Lobos are coming off their second and final mid-week bye. They are currently 16-13 on the season and 9-8 in the Mountain West which is tied with San Diego State for fifth place. The Lobos were defeated in their most recent game last Saturday, falling at Wyoming, 82-71.
In that game, new faces stepped their game up. Connor MacDougall went off for a career-high of 17 points. He was 4-of-6 from the field and 9-of-12 from the free throw line. Anthony Mathis put together a season-high 13 points, going 3-of-5 from the three. Sam Logwood also had his first career double-double effort of 12 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
On the season, Elijah Brown continues to lead the Lobos. He is averaging 18.5 points per game and 20.2 points per game in conference action. Both of those numbers are second among the league.
Through 17 league games, the Lobos are continue to be the top shooting team in the conference. From the field, they are shooting 46.5 percent. From the free throw line, the Lobos are at 75.6 percent which is first in the league and 31st in the nation.
San Diego State comes into the game with a 17-12 overall record and 9-8 Mountain West record. The Aztecs are coming off a victory over Air Force on Wednesday evening.
As a team, the Aztecs are shooting 41.6 percnet from the field in conference action and just 29.7 percent from the three. They are averaging 66.9 points per game and giving up just 63.1 points per game in conference action.
In league play, the Aztecs are led by Trey Kell. He is averaging 13.2 points per game and 5.1 rebounds per game. He is shooting 38.3 percent from the field. Two others are averaging double figures in conference action. Jeremy Hemsley and Malik Pope are averaging 11.6 and 10.8 points per game, respectively.
ABOUT THE COACHES
Craig Neal is in his fourth year as head coach of the Lobos. He owns a 75-51 career record at UNM. He is the first coach in Mountain West history to win at San Diego State, Boise State and Colorado State. Steve Fisher is in his 18th season with the Aztecs and owns a 384-207 record at SDSU.
ABOUT THE SERIES
The Lobos and the Aztecs will face off for the 84th time in program history on Saturday, with the series dating back to Jan. 2, 1976. The Lobos hold an all-time record of 45-38 against the Aztecs. The home team has had a big advantage in the series. Inside WisePies Arena, the Lobos have won 27 out of 38 games. In the last meeting, the Lobos took down the Aztecs in San Diego by a score of 68-62.
