RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. – The University of New Mexico women’s golf team finished 10th at San Diego State’s March Mayhem held at The Farms Golf Club on Mar. 21.

“I’m so proud of our team,” said head coach Jill Trujillo after the fourth round finished.

The tournament was originally scheduled to be played from Mar. 20 to Mar. 22 however due to various delays and less than ideal weather conditions, the tournament was condensed down to two days. On Mar. 20, the teams were scheduled to play 36-holes straight but tournament officials delayed the second round until the next day, Mar. 21, due to darkness.

With a 7:15 a.m. [PT] start time to complete the second round and with a 90-percent chance of rain, officials decided that once the second round was completed from the day previous, play would continue from the third round directly into the fourth. This inevitably left the field to 36-holes on both days left of the tournament.

“They battled hard and fought for every shot,” said Trujillo.

UNM competed against Arizona in the first round and lost 2-3 and they moved directly into the consolation bracket where they played Idaho. In the second round to Idaho, the Lobos won 3-1-1 and continued to move through to the third round where they were head-to-head with Washington State.

The third round for the Lobos was a battle but senior Manon Mollé, junior Alexandra Moisand and sophomore Darian Zachek clinched the lead and moved onto the fourth-round defeating Washington State 3-1-1. In the fourth and final round, the Lobos were set to play California and while the Lobos fought till the end, the final went to California who claimed ninth place after winning the round with a 3-1-1 advantage.

“We had good wins against Idaho and Washington State and I know our match with Cal made us that much stronger” mentioned Trujillo.

Despite weather conditions and unavoidable darkness issues, the Lobos fought long and hard over the course of this two-day tournament and showed that they are working towards improving themselves every chance they step onto the green.

The Lobos will have two weeks to practice at home and prepare for the PING/ASU Invitational hosted by Arizona State in Tempe, AZ from April 7th-9th.
