RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. – The University of New Mexico women’s golf team fell to Arizona 2-3 in the first round of San Diego State’s March Mayhem held at The Farms Golf Club on Mar. 20.
“We gave Arizona a good run…a few late birdies lost us the match, but we hung tough,” said head coach Jill Trujillo.
For the Lobos, sophomore Darian Zachek also found her way onto the board first for the Lobos after she clinched a very consistent round against Arizona’s Sandra Nordass. Even though Nordass earned two-birdies, she was unable to make up for Zachek’s run where she only had four-bogies and birdie.
Junior Ingrid Gutierrez matched up against Arizona’s Krystal Qulhuls and it was steep competition through all 18-holes. Gutierrez was able to find three birdies in her run as opposed to Qulhuls’ single birdie and with that, Gutierrez got one win for UNM.
The match-ups for senior Manon Molle, junior Alexandra Moisand and senior Eva Saulnier ended up scoreless for the Lobos but were still competitive against their Arizona players.
Due to a darkness suspension, the second round of matches was delayed till Tuesday, Mar. 21, where the Lobos were holding the lead at 4-1 against Idaho.
The round starts at 7:15 a.m. [PT] or 8:15 [MT] and will continue into the third round where the Lobos will either play the winner of Washington St. or San Fran.
