ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The University of New Mexico Lobos are headed to San Antonio in order to compete in the 2017 installment of the Lone Star Invitational hosted by the University of Texas at San Antonio March, 20-21.
UNM is looking to go back-to-back at the Lone Star Invitational, and claim their fourth team title in the tournament’s eight year history. Last season, the Lobos carded a cumulative score of 13-over 877 (293-286-298), and finished six shots clear of runner-up Rice and thirteen strokes clear of third-place North Texas.
The six-shot victory stands as the second largest margin of victory in tournament history, along with the Lobos acting as the only team with multiple tournament titles.
Last season’s performance was lead by Gustavo Morantes, who posted a fourth-place performance at 2-over 218. Morantes also led the field in par-5 scoring with an average of 4.08.
This year’s field includes, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Illinois, Little Rock, Louisiana-Lafayette, McNeese State, Mississippi State, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Oklahoma, Rice, Southeastern Louisiana, Texas State, UTEP and UTSA.
The tournament will be held at Briggs Ranch Golf Club and is set to play at 7,247 yards and par 72.
The setup for this year’s competition is shotgun starts at 8:30 a.m. both days, with a challenging 36 holes scheduled for Monday and the final 18 slated for Tuesday.
The Lone Star Invitational has treated the Lobos kindly, with two team championships coming in 2011 (3-under 861) and 2014 (16-under 848) and the aforementioned 2016 campaign. In addition, Gavin Green also earned the individual medalist honor in 2014 with a 6-under 210.
Some other notable feats for UNM and it’s players at the Lone Star Invitational include the second lowest team round in tournament history (14-under 274) and the lowest all-time individual round which was a 8-under 64 posted by Jon Catlin in 2011’s opening round.
