LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of New Mexico softball team fell to New Mexico State 8-0 in five innings in Las Cruces on Wednesday. The Lobos are now 14-11 on the season.
The Lobos started off the game with back-to-back singles from Shelbie Franc and D’Andra DeFlora but the next three Lobos went down order.
The Lobos only pounded out two hits until the fifth inning. Lauren Wilmert singled in the second and Jasmine Casados singled in the third. Cheyenne Smith put down a bunt single in the fifth and Franc would reach on an error but nothing would follow, as the Aggies kept the Lobos scoreless through five innings.
New Mexico State got on the board quick in the first, as a two singles drove in three runs. A solo home run by Kelsey Horton in the third, put the Aggies up 4-0. Two more runs were driven in in the fourth to extend their lead to 6-0.
A two-run shot over the left field wall for the Aggies in the bottom of the fifth ended the game on a mercy rule.
Tess McPherson took the loss in the circle, dropping to 6-5 on the year. She allowed four runs off six hits. Main came in for McPherson and allowed four runs off five hits.
The Lobos left six on base. Franc, DeFlora, Casados, Wilmert and C. Smith each had a hit for UNM.
The Lobos will take a break from action this weekend and will pick back up next week on March 24 for a three-game series in Las Vegas, Nev. Against UNLV.
