SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team is set to compete in the 2017 installment of the Lamkin San Diego Classic this Monday and Tuesday at the San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, Calif.
The event is co-hosted by the University of San Diego and San Diego State, and is considered one of the premier collegiate tournaments in the country.
Five of the teams set to compete are currently ranked inside the top-30 according to GolfStat.com — No. 18 University of Texas, No. 20 Duke, No. 22 San Diego State University, No. 28 North Carolina and No. 29 Ole Miss. The tournament’s field is rounded out by Arizona, Colorado State, Middle Tennessee, New Mexico, North Texas, Pacific, Saint Mary’s College, San Diego, Santa Clara and UCLA.
Last season at this tournament, the Lobos were lead by freshman Samuel Kim, who posted a 6-under 66 in the final round, tying for his lowest career collegiate score.
Two other Lobos finished inside the top 15 in Gustavo Morantes (71-72-75) and Andre Garcia (73-73-72), who both finished tied for 11th place at 2-over 218. Another Lobo in Sean Carlon secured a top-25 finish, coming in at 7-over 223 (72-79-72).
The University of Texas won the team title in 2016 with a score of 852 (-12) and Longhorn Beau Hossler won medalist honors at 8-under par 208 (69-70-69).
The tournament will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Monday with a shotgun start with plans to complete two rounds. The third and final round will begin on Tuesday, March 14 at 8:00 a.m. with groups going off of tees #1 and #10.
