RENO, NEV. — Former University of New Mexico men’s soccer standout and captain Chris Wehan has officially signed a professional contract with Reno 1868 FC, the organization announced Wednesday. Wehan joins two other Lobos from the 2016 UNM squad to sign professional contracts including Niko Hansen (Columbus Crew SC) and Patrick Khouri (GBK Kokkola).

“Chris is a very young and talented player,” said Ian Russell, head coach of Reno 1868 FC. “He was a prolific goal scorer in college and I believe Chris will make an immediate impact for our offense.”
Wehan completed his career as a Lobo posting 70 points on 31 goals and eight assists. He collected 10 game-winning goals and went a perfect 3-for-3 in PK attempts in 80 games and 6,492 minutes on the pitch.
“I would like to thank the New Mexico community for all the support as I pursue this dream in professional soccer,” Wehan said. “I hope I can continue to make the community proud and represent UNM as best as possible.”
The 2016 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List honoree racked up numerous accolades during his time as a Lobo for his outstanding performance both on the field and in the classroom. Wehan was a three-time All-Conference USA First Team selection as well as a 2013 All-Freshman Team selection. In 2016 he was named Conference USA Tournament MVP after his two goals and assist led UNM to the C-USA title.
Wehan also earned Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week honors on Nov. 15 and was named to the 2016 NSCAA All-Southeast Region First Team.
In addition to his prowess on the field, Wehan also excelled in the classroom earning NSCAA Scholar All-America First Team honors three times in his career.
Wehan will make his debut with Reno 1868 FC on Saturday, March 11 when the squad takes on Sacramento Republic FC at Greater Nevada Field at 4 p.m. PT/3 p.m. MT. Visit www.reno1868fc.com for more information.
