COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — University of New Mexico center fielder Luis Gonzalez’s weekend can be summed up by just how No. 23 Dallas Baptist pitched to the junior by the end of the series.

The Patriots just started walking him.

Gonzalez went 8-for-11 (.727) during the three-game series against the nationally ranked Patriots with a home run, two doubles, two RBI, three runs, two stolen bases and walked five times – including in each of his final three at-bats (the final one intentional). For his effort, Gonzalez was named the Mountain West Player of the Week for Feb. 20-26.

Gonzalez finished the weekend with an .813 on-base percentage, reaching base in 13 of his 16 plate appearances – including 11 of his last 12.

Gonzalez, who is on the Golden Spikes Award preseason watch list, had multiple hits in each game – going 3-for-5 Friday, 3-for-4 Saturday and 2-for-2 Sunday. During Sunday’s extra-inning 7-6 loss to DBU in the series’ rubber match, Gonzalez was walked four times – becoming the first Lobo to walk four times in a game since Aaron Siple on April 11, 2015.

Gonzalez is second in the Mountain West in on-base percentage (.567) and third in the Mountain West in hitting (.455), slugging (.727), doubles (3) and stolen bases (2).

It’s the second straight week to start the season a Lobo has been named Mountain West Player of the Week with Jack Zoellner winning it the first week of the season.

The Lobos return to action 1 p.m. (MT) Tuesday when they head to Lubbock to take on No. 11 Texas Tech. Listen to the game live with play-by-play from Scott Galletti on ESPN Radio 101.7 The TEAM streamed at www.1017theteam.com and on the TuneIn Radio app.
