SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The University of New Mexico women’s golf team made their way to the Bruin Wave Invitational this weekend and headed onto the green to start their practice round on Sunday, Feb. 26 here at the San Luis Obispo Country Club.
The Lobos are very familiar with this course as well as the field their competing against because it was just last year when the Lobos found a sixth-place finish in 2016. After a stiff three rounds, the team totaled a score of 34-over-par 898 and they edged out two top ranked teams with No. 11 Stanford and No. 9 Washington.
Last year Manon Mollé and Ingrid Gutierrez played as individuals for the Lobos and finished tied for 12th with a total score of four-over-par 220. Alongside Mollé and Gutierrez, both Eva Saulnier and Alexandra Moisand are very familiar with this course and both seek to finish well for the Lobos.
“The Bruin Wave always has a very competitive field and we are looking forward to the challenge,” said head coach Jill Trujillo.
Not only is the competition steep this year especially with the returning 2016 first place finishing team UCLA and cohost of the event, but California’s drought seems to be ending just in time for the Lobos this week.
“San Luis Obispo had some major rain this week so the course is very wet and playing very long,” mentioned Trujillo. “They haven’t been able to cut the fairways or rough for over a week so that will add to the difficulty of the layout.”
However, with this season’s outlook of “staying the moment,” a little bit of rain and rough terrain won’t stop this returning line-up from last year’s team with the addition of sophomore Darian Zachek.
“The team is ready for whatever comes our way,” said Trujillo.
The tournament will have a shotgun start at 8 a.m. [PT] and continuous play of 36-holes on Monday, Feb. 27 at the San Luis Obispo Country Club.
