SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of New Mexico softball team wrapped up the UTSA Classic with a 3-2 win over Texas State Sunday morning, improving the Lobos record to 7-8 on the season.
“The team battled back hard after going down two runs early,” said head coach Erica Beach. “That takes a lot of mental toughness and I am so proud of them.”
It was the second straight game that the Lobos came from behind as Texas State scored two runs in the first inning off Marissa Bethke. But the Lobos responded in the second with a Callie McGarrigle home run to right field, her first career home run.
After Bethke and the Lobo defense kept Texas State scoreless in the second, the Lobo offense took the lead. With two outs, D’Andra DeFlora singled through the left side. Jasmine Casados took a pitch over the left center wall, her first on the year and 18th home run in her career, scoring DeFlora and eventually securing the victory for the Lobos.
“Callie and Jasmine both hit the long ball and that was really great to see.
Texas State threaten in the bottom of the third but the Lobos made a pitching change, going to Tess McPherson to get out of the inning. She would pitch the rest of the game and would not allow a hit in her 4.2 innings of work, earning her fourth win on the year. She improved to 4-3 and now has 10 wins in the circle as a Lobo.
“Tess threw really well in relief for us and was able to hold the lead for the win.
“Our defense was strong throughout and I love seeing the team fire on all cylinders.”
New Mexico pounded out seven hits with McGarrigle and Shelbie Franc leading way with 2-for-3 efforts. Casados finished with two RBIs.
The Lobos will be on the road for the fourth straight weekend, heading to Pueblo, Colo. for a three-game series with Northern Colorado. More information on how to follow will be available on GoLobos.com later in the week.
