LARAMIE, Wyo. – The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team received a career-high performance from Connor MacDougall and a first career double-double from Sam Logwood but dropped its final regular season road game at Wyoming, 82-71. The Lobos are now 16-13 on the season and 9-8 in the Mountain West.
“I thought we played really, really hard,” said head coach Craig Neal. “We got it down to a one possession game but we made two bad mistakes on defense. Instead of keeping our poise, I thought we tried to come back down and hit home runs.”
MacDougall finished with 17 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field and 9-of-12 from the foul line off the bench. He also brought down six rebounds. Anthony Mathis, who also came off the bench, was the second leading scorer for the Lobos, finishing with a season-high 13 points.
Starter Sam Logwood picked up his first career double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. He was 4-of-9 from the field and perfect from the foul line in four attempts. Elijah Brown was the only other Lobo in double digits. He added 10 points on 4-of-17 shooting from the field and 2-of-3 from the foul line.
It was a slow start for the Lobos as Wyoming scored the first nine points of the game and led 9-2 going into the first media timeout. New Mexico responded by going on an 8-2 run to bring the Lobos within one, 11-10.
The Lobos would tie the game up at 19-19 after a Mathis two. A four-point lead would be as big of a lead as they would get the rest of the half as Wyoming went on a 13-3 run to finish out the half with a 38-31 lead.
In the second half, Wyoming would extend their lead to 13 with 10:31 left to play. The Lobos worked their way back, cutting their lead to five after back-to-back threes from Mathis.
The Lobos would then cut the lead to two points twice after free throws from Brown and MacDougall, but Wyoming hit a three that put them back up by five and sparked a 12-4 run that finished out the game.
For the game, Wyoming shot 48.3 percent (14-29) from the three to the Lobos 15.0 percent (3-20). From the field, the Lobos shot 39.7 percent (25-63) and shot 78.3 percent from the foul line.
The Lobos will have a bye next week and return to action next Saturday. They will host San Diego State for Senior Night inside WisePies Arena at 8 p.m. MT. The game will air on CBS Sports Network.
