Van Leijsen earns MW Men’s Tennis Player of the Week

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Junior Bart Van Leijsen has been named Mountain West Men’s Tennis Player of the Week after helping the University of New Mexico men’s tennis team to a 3-0 record last weekend. This honor is Van Leijsen’s second in his career and the first this season.
 
Van Leijsen helped lead New Mexico to a 3-0 weekend of wins over BYU, 4-3, Nebraska, 4-0, and Utah, 4-3. He also went a combined 4-1 at the No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles positions.
 
Van Leijsen collected singles victories at the No. 1 position over BYU’s Keaton Cullimore, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (3), and David Micevski of Utah, 6-3, 6-3. He is currently 6-7 overall in singles this season.
 
Alongside Freshman Dominic West in doubles play, Van Leijsen defeated Nebraska’s David Samardzija and Tomislav Antoljak, 6-2, and Utah’s Egbert Weverink and David Micevsk, 6-4. He is currently 5-3 overall in doubles at the No. 2 position with West this season.
 
The Lobos will host opening weekend against UTSA at 10 a.m. MT and NMSU at 4 p.m. MT on Saturday at the McKinnon Family Stadium. More details and information on the matches to be announced.
