ALBUQUEQRUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico women’s golf spring season will be in full swing in five days’ time as the team heads to the Bruin Wave Invitational in San Luis Obispo, California.
The team’s spring season started out with a challenge set by head coach Jill Trujillo to “stay in the moment” and she sought out the help from her four seniors, Katerina Jaeger, Manon Mollé, Eva Saulnier and Kalyn Thayer.
“In any sport you’re in you want to think about goals but we’re not focusing so much on goals but what we want to accomplish day to day,” said Trujillo. “We’re making sure that the training that we’re doing is set for what we’re going to do on the golf course this season.”
Staying in the moment is arguably the hardest thing for any soon-to-be graduating senior to do especially when there are only three months left until these four Lobos will be officially called alumnae. However, these student-athletes are committed to soaking up every minute they have while still being able to play for UNM.
“We talked a lot about it,” said senior Eva Saulnier. “…we need to stay in the present and try not to look forward too much. If we do that, I think we’ll have a really good season and it’ll be a nice finish.”
For this spring season, the Lobos are looking to play in four tournaments: The Bruin Wave Invitational, Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational, SDSU’s March Mayhem and finally the PING/ASU Invitational. Even though the team will not be playing on the home green this spring, they are hopeful and excited to see what successes are to come starting in California.
“I’m just trying to enjoy one last season before I graduate,” said senior Katerina Jaeger. “It’s hard especially now because this place finally feels like home but all I can do is play some good golf and have a good time.”
Trujillo wants these seniors to help the team understand that they have to play their tournament schedule before they can start thinking about the conference championship and, as a team, they have to appreciate every day they get to step out onto the course.
“In my last season I just want to make some good memories with all of these people we have gotten to know over these past couple years and finish strong,” said senior Kalyn Thayer.
The Lobos will be taking off for the Bruin Wave Invitational Saturday, Feb. 25 and they will be playing both the first and second rounds on Monday, Feb. 27.
