COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The huge numbers put up by University of New Mexico first baseman Jack Zoellner in helping the Lobos sweep Binghamton at home was rewarded by being selected the Mountain West Player of the Week on Monday.
Zoellner in UNM’s three-game sweep of fellow 2016 NCAA Regional qualifier Binghamton hit .500 (6-for-12) with three home runs, a double, eight RBI and five runs. Zoellner highlighted the weekend Saturday when he went 3-for-4 with three home runs and six RBI in a 10-4 victory. Both the three home runs and the six RBI were single-game highs for Zoellner.
Along with his performance at the plate, Zoellner didn’t commit an error in his 41 chances (39 putouts, two assists) in the field while helping the Lobos outscore Binghamton 29-12 over the weekend.
This is Zoellner’s first Mountain West Player of the Week honor.
The Lobos are 3-0 for the first time since 2008 when they started the season 7-0 in UNM coach Ray Birmingham’s first season at the helm.
