COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The University of New Mexico softball team dropped both of its game Saturday morning, falling 3-1 to Stephen F. Austin and 10-1 in five innings to No. 19 Texas A&M. The Lobos are now 4-5 on the season.
Game one was slow for both the Lobos and the Ladyjacks until the top of fifth when New Mexico’s Jordan Gelfand drew a walk and later scored on a couple of errors by SFA. Jasmine Casados loaded the bases with a single to shortstop but the inning was ended on a fly out to centerfield by Michala Erickson.
Stephen F. Austin responded in the bottom of the fifth inning with a three-run home run, taking a 3-1 lead over the Lobos. Neither team was able to get any offense going the rest of the way.
The Lobos only pounded out a total of four hits. Casados, Tess McPherson, Lauren Wilmert and Gelfand each had a hit.
In the circle, freshman Jensen Main took the loss, dropping to 1-3 on the season. She allowed two runs off six hits, while walking one and striking out one. The Lobos went to Marissa Bethke in the fifth with one out. In her 1.2 innings of work, she allowed one run off two hits while striking out two.
In game two, the Lobo offense got out to a 1-0 lead over the No. 19 ranked Aggies. In the second, Casados led off with a double to right center. Erickson was hit by a pitch and the two moved over to second and third on a ground out by Wilmert. Casados then scored on Cameryn O’Grady’s single to short.
But the Lobos did not get a hit the rest of the way, going down one-two-three in each the third, fourth and fifth innings.
That stretch allowed Texas A&M to take a lead, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second, five in the third and three in the fourth.
The Lobos tried to keep the Aggies off balance by making a pitching change, going from McPherson to Krissy Fortner. But the Aggies continued to push to a 10-1 lead going into the Lobos’ final chance in the fifth.
Casados and O’Grady had the only hits for the Lobos against the Aggies. McPherson took the loss, falling to 3-2 on the season. She allowed seven runs off five hits, while walking six and striking out two in 2.1 innings of work. Fortner allowed three runs off five hits, while walking one and striking out one in 1.2 innings of work.
The Lobos will look to get back on track in the final game of the Texas A&M Invitational. They face off against Missouri State Sunday at 8 a.m. MT. That game was originally scheduled for 9 a.m. MT but was moved up an hour due to weather. For live stats, click here.
