UNM’s Bertrand wins 200 fly, Lobos take 6th at MW Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The University of New Mexico women’s swimming and diving team capped its time at the Mountain West Championships on Saturday with an individual championship while taking sixth place.
 
The Lobos’ Celine Bertrand put together the best race of her career as the junior recorded a school record while winning the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:59.25, becoming the first Lobo in history to break the two-minute mark in the race.
 
It was part of a strong performance by UNM in the 200 butterfly as the Lobos had four of the top 12 finishers in the race. Anna Lengyel qualified for the A final and finished seventh (2:01.76), Emily Huffer won the B final in 2:00.54 to take 10th and Abigail Wheeler finished 12th (2:02.72).
 
The strong showing helped New Mexico take sixth place with 697 points. Boise State won the title with 1,390 points and was followed by San Diego State (1,139), Nevada (1,089.5), Wyoming (1,004) and Colorado State (791). Finishing behind the Lobos was Fresno State (524), UNLV (520), San Jose State (496.5) and Air Force (479).
 
The Lobos had another school record fall in the 200 breaststroke as Lindsey Englestead finished with a time of 2:15.74 – .02 seconds faster than Mareike Foester’s time of 2:15.76 set last season. Englestead took seventh in the race while Emily McGill took eighth (2:16.56).
 
UNM’s Adriana Palomino took fourth place in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:30.54.
