Lobos Back in Action at San Jose State Saturday

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team (12-10, 7-4 MW) is set to return to action on Saturday at 3 p.m. (MT) in its first contest of the season against the San Jose State Spartans (7-14, 4-5 MW). The Lobos will face the Spartans just once this season prior to the Mountain West Tournament.

The Lobos enter the game coming off of a tough home loss to UNLV on Wednesday. UNM is 3-1 in its last four games, 4-2 in its last six, including wins over Boise State, Utah State and Nevada.

San Jose State enters the game opposite the Lobos, going 1-3 in its last four games but earning a 76-65 victory at UNLV last Saturday. Other Mountain West wins for the Spartans include Nevada, San Diego State (in overtime) and Air Force. SJSU will have a week break before taking on the Lobos on their home turf.

UNM continues to be led by junior Cherise Beynon who collected her ninth game scoring 20 points or more on Wednesday against UNLV, and senior Richelle van der Keijl who notched her sixth double-double of the season in the matchup. Beynon averages 15.9 points per game followed by van der Keijl who averages 13.2.

San Jose State is led by senior Dezz Ramos who averages 22.0 points per game on the season. Ramos joined Beynon on the 2016-17 Preseason All-Mountain West Team after being named 2015-16 Mountain West Newcomer of the Year in her first season playing for the Spartans. Ramos leads the Mountain West in scoring, 3-pointers made and has scored over 30 points on six occasions this season.

Series History:
The Lobos are 7-1 all-time against San Jose State and went 2-1 over the Spartans last season. Saturday’s game will be the first and only regular-season meeting between the two teams this season.

Last season, the Lobos suffered their first loss in program history against SJSU on the road on Feb. 13 at the final second. With the Lobos up by one, SJSU snatched a steal and scored a buzzer-beating layup to claim a one-point victory, 59-58. UNM followed the loss with a 65-51 win in the first round of the Mountain West Tournament over SJSU on March 8 in Las Vegas.

The Coaches:
The Lobos are led by head coach Mike Bradbury in his first season with UNM, his 10th season overall. Bradbury posts a career record of 190-127 and is 12-10 at the helm of the Lobos.

San Jose State is led by Jamie Craighead who posts a 40-53 record with SJSU in her third season and a career record of 91-123.
