McKendry is one of just five young players to earn their first call up to the Men’s National Team this January.

“This is something Ben has worked for since he was a little kid, wearing the jersey of his country’s Senior National Team,” UNM head men’s soccer coach Jeremy Fishbein said. “I’m really proud of Ben and excited to watch his continued success at the International level.”

McKendry, who played for the Lobos from 2012-14, signed with the Vancouver Whitecaps FC in 2015 and has continued a successful professional career since. In his time with the Whitecaps, the 23-year-old midfielder won the 2015 Canadian Championship and later earned man-of-the-match honors in the 2016 semi-finals.

Prior to his time with Vancouver Whitecaps FC, he joined the Canadian youth program at the age of 17 and then represented Canada at the CONCACAF Men’s Under-20 Championship in 2013 while he was still a Lobo.

During his time at UNM, McKendry was a two-time Conference USA First Team honoree in 2013 and 2014, a two-time All-Region selection, the MPSF Newcomer of the Year in 2012 and was also a recipient of four different All-America honors.

McKendry racked up 33 points on 14 goals and five assists in his three years as a Lobo and ties recent graduate and 9th overall MLS SuperDraft selection Niko Hansen for third in Lobo history with most goals as a freshman (7). Hansen was drafted to the Columbus Crew SC on Friday.

Fans can tune in live as McKendry competes with Canada vs. Bermuda on Jan. 22 in Hamilton, Bermuda. The Sunday afternoon match at the Bermuda National Sports Centre will kick off at 5 p.m. local time and be broadcast live on CanadaSoccer.com.
