INDEPENDENCE, Minn. – After day one of the 2016 Gopher Invitational by the University of New Mexico mens golf team sits in 7th at 13-over 581 (291-290).
Andre Garcia lead the pack at 1-over 143 (71-72), after 36 holes of competition Garcia finds himself in a five-way tie for 11th.
The Lobos battled blustery conditions throughout the first 47 holes, as the winds died down later in the afternoon UNM was able to make up some ground on the field.
Strong afternoon performances from the likes of Gustavo Morantes (76-71) and Sean Carlon (82-73), who shaved five and nine strokes off their morning performances, helped the Lobos defend their position on the leaderboard.
Morantes and Carlon sit at T34 and T66 respectively.
Andre Bevins joined Garcia inside the top-30. Bevins sits at 4-over 146 (72-74) after today’s performance.
Rounding out the Lobos’ list of competitors was Samuel Kim who started strong, opening at even par 72, but stumbled coming into the clubhouse, eventually finishing at 8-over 150 (72-78).
“Not a bad start for us. Each guy had times they had to grind through a tough stretch or bounce back from bad holes.” began UNM head coach Glen Millican, “We handled the weather well and kept ourselves in a good position with one round to play.”
On the statistical side UNM was highlighted by Morantes’ par-3 scoring average of 2.88, tied for third lowest in the field. Accompanying Morantes was Andre Garcia, who carried a par-4 scoring average of 4.00, also tied for third lowest in the field.
As a team the Lobos were able to take advantage of the par-5’s despite the windy conditions, closing the day with a team scoring average of 4.90. In addition, UNM tallied 25 total birdies, tied for third most as a team on the day.
“A good final round will go a long way for us tomorrow.” concluded Millican.
