ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The sun was out, jumpers were available, and little kids went home happy. Oh yeah, there was a football practice as well. On a perfect Saturday afternoon, Lobo football practiced for their final Fall Camp practice, going inside University Stadium in front of a nice group of fans on Fan Photo Day.
With Levy serving concessions and bouncy houses and jumpers for the kids, it was a festive atmosphere. However, while it was the parents that seemed more interested in the practice, it was definitely the kids that took center stage when practice ended. Kids lined up to get photos and autographs from their favorite players. Even the players were having fun. Austin Apodaca, who was waiting for a post practice interview, asked if he could go sign autographs while he was waiting. When Lamar Jordan got done, kids lined up to get UNM’s quarterback.
The close of camp marked the end of open public practices for the team, as Coach Davie had all of Fall Camps open for a third straight year (including 2014 where part of camp was in Albuquerque and part in Ruidoso). Now, life will change as school begins in earnest on Monday. It’s something else that UNM’s football players excel at. Last Spring the team turned in the second-best GPA for a semester in the last 30 years, and the 2015-16 season saw 23 Lobos graduate. The 2016 Lobos have seven college graduates on the squad in Austin Apodaca, Jack Lamm, Dakota Cox, Daniel Henry, Cole Gautsche, Jack Ziltz and Garrett Adcock, who is actually in his second year of law school as a graduate student.
Everything is gearing up for Thursday night, September 1, when UNM will take on South Dakota at 7 p.m. in a game that will broadcast live from Louisiana to Alaska on ROOT SPORTS. Fans will want to tune into GoLobos and Facebook Live next Monday, August 29 for the season preview press conference from head coach Bob Davie around noon. Fans will also want to make plans for Monday night, August 29 for the first Lobo Talk with Bob Davie of the season. This season, Lobo Talk returns to Kelly’s Brew Pub in Nob Hill and will be once again broadcast on the internet.
