UNM TOURNAMENT NOTES

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico baseball team is set to host the 2016 Mountain West Conference Tournament at Santa Ana Star Field. Tournament play begins Wednesday at 11 a.m., while the second-seeded Lobos are set to play Thursday at 7 p.m. All of New Mexico’s games will be aired on ESPN Radio 101.7 The TEAM.

Single day and all-tournament passes can be purchased online HERE.

A win in the double elimination style tournament ensures a spot in the NCAA Regional Tournament. The Lobos, just a game shy of the top record in the MW, have the unique opportunity of competing on their home field with their post season fate on the line. Extra bleachers have been brought in to increase the field’s capacity to 1,200 fans, bracing for great support from the Albuquerque community.

The Lobos have a history of success in the tournament, including two championships under head coach Ray Birmingham in 2011 and 2012. Birmingham’s Lobos have won 16 out of 28 tournament games since he took over the program in 2008.

The Lobos are slated to open the tournament against the highest seed remaining after games are played between UNLV vs. Air Force and Nevada vs. San Diego State/San Jose State (both games take place Wednesday). That game will take place Thursday at 7 p.m. A win puts them in the Friday night game at 7 p.m., while a loss sends them to either the 11 a.m. or 3 p.m. game Friday.
