FULLERTON, Calif. – The University of New Mexico softball team went scoreless in a 2-0 loss to Cal State Fullerton Sunday afternoon. The Lobos finish the Easton Tournament 2-3 and are now 15-11 on the season.
The Lobos only pounded out five hits on the day. Leading the way was senior Mariah Rimmer, going 2-for-2. Junior Jasmine Casados and freshmen Brooke Breland and Kasey Halleen each had a hit.
The Lobos threatened in the fourth inning as Rimmer singled up the middle with one. She advanced to third on Casados’ double to left. With two outs, freshman Jade Gray drew a walk to load the bases.
In the fifth, the Lobos tried to get their offense going. Breland led off the inning with a single to center. Sophomore Chelsea Johnson was hit by a pitch to put runners at second and third. The two moved over on a sacrifice bunt by freshman D’Andra DeFlora and the bases were loaded with two outs after Cal State Fullerton intentionally walked Rimmer. But the inning ended on Casados’ ground out to first.
Cal State Fullerton put a run up in the third, scoring on a pass ball, after two scoreless innings off freshman start Colette Robert. There second run of the game came in the fifth off an RBI single to center.
Robert takes the loss for the Lobos and is now 7-5 on the season. In six innings of work, she allowed two runs, one earned, off nine hits while striking out one and walking one.
The Lobos finish the Easton Tournament 2-3 and are now 15-11 on the season and will open up Mountain West action this coming weekend, playing host to Utah State for a three game series Thursday, Friday and Saturday. They will hold their annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 26, which will start at noon.
