Complete Box: Nevada 7, New Mexico 6
RENO, Nev. – The University of New Mexico baseball team (8-6, 2-1 MW) finished its weekend series against the Nevada Wolf Pack (5-10, 1-2 MW) with a 7-6 loss Sunday. The Lobos took the weekend series against the Wolf Pack, 2-1.
New Mexico was led offensively by Carl Stajduhar, who went 3-for-5 with four RBI. He recorded a double and a three-run home run. Chris DeVito, Jack Zoellner and Michael Eaton each went 2-for-4.
The Lobos put a run on the board right away in the top of the first. Dan Collier led off the game and reached base on a hit by pitch. After stealing second, Stajduhar plated him on a RBI double down the left field line. The lead would be short lived, as the Wolf Pack scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.
The Wolf Pack struck again in the third inning, filling the bases and scoring two more runs to make it 4-1. Colton Thomson ended the rally with a clutch strikeout, stranding runners on second and third. Nevada’s lead was extended to five runs after another two-run inning in the fourth.
Down, 6-1, the Lobos roared back into the game with four runs in the fifth. Michael Eaton and Jared Holley led off the side with back-to-back singles. Holley would be tagged out at second on a fielder’s choice, but Eaton would score after an error on the following at bat. With two outs on the board and two runners on base, Stajduhar hit his fourth home run of the year past left field, cutting the team’s deficit to a run.
Nevada scored their final run in the seventh, pushing the lead to 7-5. In the eighth, DeVito led off by hitting his fourth homer of the season, a solo shot past right field. The Lobos had the tying run on first in the eighth, but could not push him into home. The Lobos looked to tie the game in the ninth with one-out single from Erick Migueles. Pinch runner Jared Mang would move into scoring position on the next at bat, but a double play stranded him and ended the game.
Thomson (1-1) took the loss in the start, with 3.2 innings pitched and four earned runs allowed. The Lobos used five arms out of the bullpen, which collectively held the Wolf Pack to one run.
The Lobos will stay on the road for their next matchup, a midweek nonconference tilt at Grand Canyon Tuesday at 7 p.m. MST.
Notes: Stajduhar and DeVito are now tied for the team lead in home runs at four…The all-time series between New Mexico and Nevada is now tied at 13-13…DeVito now has a team-best 17 RBI on the season.
