ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — After posting a 4-6 record in a tough non-conference schedule, The University of New Mexico Lobos are set to open conference play on Thursday night on the road at Fresno State (7-4) at 8 p.m. (MT).
Both teams are kicking off Mountain West play in Thursday’s matchup. Last season, the Lobos opened league play at Nevada, earning a 51-47 win. The victory snapped a six-season loss streak in Mountain West openers. UNM and Fresno State are no strangers to opening league competition together, in 2014-15, the Lobos opened with a 71-65 loss to the Bulldogs on the road.
UNM is led by senior Richelle van der Keijl who averages 15.2 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. She is followed by Preseason All-Mountain West Team honoree Cherise Beynon who averages 14.2 points per game and 8.0 boards.
Fresno State is led by junior Bego Faz Davalos who currently postws 16.3 points and 11.9 rebounds per game. She joined Beynon on the five-member Preseason All-Mountain West Team after being named 2015-16 Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year last season.
The Coaches:
The Lobos are led by head coach Mike Bradbury in his first season with UNM, his 10th season overall. Bradbury posts a career record of 181-123 and is 4-6 at the helm of the Lobos
Fresno State is coached by Jaime White in her third season coaching the Bulldogs. White is 168-154 in her 11th season and 52-26 at Fresno State.
Series History:
The Lobos are 9-10 overall against the Bulldogs but 1-7 on the road. UNM’s most recent road loss at Fresno State came in the squads’ last meeting on February 27, 2016 when the Lobos went down 51-43. UNM lost both meetings with Fresno State last season, the first coming in double overtime at home at WisePies Arena – The Pit on January 2 by a score of 69-65.
