ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Let’s try this basketball thing again. After having a game postponed due to dangerous travel conditions for Eastern Illinois, the University of New Mexico will now head right into the teeth of the American Cold Front, heading to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to take on the Marquette Golden Eagles (8-2) on Wednesday in a game that will tip off at 10:30 a.m. in Albuquerque.
New Mexico (4-5) has won two of it’s last three games, including a 79-66 rivalry win over UTEP and a 64-49 win over SMU. While it’s awfully cold in Milwaukee for UNM’s Monday arrival (12 degrees with a wind chill of -5), the weather should warm up to 34 degrees on Wednesday.
So far rebounding has been a big key for the team, with the squad 4-1 when outrebounding its opponents, and 0-4 when getting outrebounded. UNM leads the country in defensive rebounds per game at 34.0, and the team is fourth overall with 48.22 boards per game. Part of UNM’s big rebounding numbers are in part to Richelle van der Keijl. Richelle averaged 10.5 rebounds per game last week along with 17.0 points as she earned Mountain West Player of the Week honors.
Cherise Beynon is fourth nationally in total assists (72) and assists per game (8.0).
Marquette enters having won two in a row including an 81-75 win at Wisconsin. The Golden Eagles are led by Allazia Blockton, who is averaging 18.5 points per game.
The Coaches:
The Lobos are led by head coach Mike Bradbury in his first season with UNM, his 10th season overall. Bradbury posts a career record of 182-122 and is 4-5 at the helm of the Lobos.
Marquette is coached by Carolyn Kieger, who is 31-39 in her third season with the Golden Eagles.
Series History:
The Lobos and the Golden Eagles have faced one another just once in program history on December 31, 1995 in which the Lobos claimed a tight 73-71 victory on the road. That season, the Lobos went 14-15 overall (6-8 WAC) under head coach Don Flanagan. Despite it’s losing record in conference play, UNM advanced to the third round of the WAC Tournament before falling 72-65 against Colorado State on March 9.
