ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Teriyon Gipson and Daniel Henry each took home a pair of honors, with Gipson earning Bill Brannin Most Valuable Player as the 2016 Lobo Football Honors Banquet was held Sunday night at the Embassy Suites Hotel.
Gipson, who lead the nation in yards per carry and has rushed for 1,209 yards on the season to lead the team, earned both the Brannin Award as overall team MVP, and the Reese Hill Offensive MVP Award as well. Henry, who is second on the team in tackles, was named the Colonel H.J. Golightly Defensive MVP and the Chuck Cummings Most Inspirational Award winner.
Jason Sanders, who leads the nation in touchback percentage, is 59-for-59 on extra points and 11-for-12 on field goals, was named the Special Teams Most Valuable Player while Tyrone Owens, who broke the 1,000-yard barrier as well with 1,084 yards, was named the Clyde Hill Most Improved Player.
Fifth-year walk-on offensive lineman Jack Lamm earned the First Team Award for Unselfish Devotion to the Team, and Garrett Adcock was the winner of the Red Menace Award. Two true freshmen took home scout team MVP awards, with quarterback Tevaka Tuioti earning it on the offensive side and defensive lineman Nahje Flowers earning it on the defensive side.
For the academic awards, Wuerffel Trophy finalist and First Team CoSIDA Academic All-American Garrett Adcock took home the Academic Achievement Award, and sophomore receiver Matt Quarells earned the Most Improved Award.
In addition to the end of season awards, first-year letter winners were presented with their varsity letterman’s jackets, and UNM’s eight All-Mountain West performers were presented with their awards.
