IN-MATCH UPDATES @LoboMensSoccer
With UNM’s win against No. 5 Charlotte Friday, the Lobos have not lost in their last six games, since the Lobos fell to then-ranked No. 5 Denver in double overtime on Oct. 19. The Lobos’ last six games have included four wins, two shutouts, and two ties.
The victory on Friday also marks the Lobos’ second time of the season earning a win over a ranked team after topping No. 25 South Carolina on Oct. 20 by a score of 2-1 to break its four-loss streak to ranked opponents this season.
The fifth-seeded Lobos took out two ranked opponents, Kentucky and Charlotte, en route to the championship match while FIU, which entered the tournament as the third seed, topped UAB and Old Dominion to earn its place.
The last time the Lobos faced FIU they claimed a commanding 4-1 victory at home on Sept. 30 to keep UNM’s undefeated home streak alive. Senior Chris Wehan was just starting to get his scoring streak going, notching his second and third goals of the season back-to-back in the first half. The teams went into the break with UNM up 2-0 before senior Niko Hansen scored the Lobos’ third in the 55th minute.
With just over 15 minutes left to play, junior Luke Lawrence notched his first goal as a Lobo to make it 4-0. FIU followed with just less than five minutes left in regulation with a goal by Joris Ahlinvi to prevent the shutout.
The Lobos will attempt to claim their first Conference USA Championship Sunday. A win would not only mean the first C-USA Championship in program history, but also an automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA Tournament.
