(10/7/2016) Football vs. No. 19 Boise StateALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Boise State exacted a measure of revenge against New Mexico as Brett Rypien looked every bit the part of a first team all-conference quarterback, going 21-for-28 for 391 yards and five touchdowns in first half as the No. 19 Broncos defeated the Lobos 49-21.

The loss dropped the Lobos to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the Mountain West, with a date with Air Force in the Cotton Bowl on tap next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Mountain Time in a game on ESPN News.

Both teams went 3-and-out on their opening possessions, but BSU went on top 7-0 after an 81-yard drive aided by two 15-yard face mask penalties on UNM and a dropped interception.  The drive ended with the first of five touchdowns from Rypien as he hit Cedrick Wilson on a fade in the end zone.  Those penalties would be a theme throughout the evening as UNM was whistled for a season-high 12.

The Lobos were able to tie the game on its next drive as after Lamar Jordan rushed three times, converting on third down, he handed the ball to Tyrone Owens, who raced up the gut untouched for a 62-yard touchdown, tying the game at 7-7, but that was the last time it would be tied.

BSU would score touchdowns on its next five drives of the half, pushing the lead to 42-7 at the half.  BSU would score on its opening second half possession before UNM finally was able to answer in the fourth quarter.  Most of those touchdowns were from the arm of Rypien, who threw touchdown passes of 7, 53, 54, 8 and 35 yards, two to Thomas Sperbeck and three to Wilson.

The Lobos finally ended the run of points when JuJuan Lawson, who entered at the start of the fourth quarter, led the Lobos on a 14-play, 82-yard drive as he rushed over for a touchdown on fourth down.  UNM added one last score with 20 seconds left when Lamar Jordan came in and hit Anu Somoye for a 12-yard score, Somoye’s first career touchdown.

New Mexico, which won the turnover battle in last year’s game 4-2, threw an interception to end the first half and didn’t force a turnover in the game.

The Lobos did keep up the good work on the ground, rushing for 382 yards on 61 carries, and limiting Boise State to just 65 yards on the ground on 29 carries.  However, the air was a different story as Boise State went 21-for-30 for 391 yards, while UNM was just 4-for-15 for 39 yards.

Jordan led the way with 139 yards , Tyrone Owens added 82 and JuJuan Lawson had 62.

New Mexico Quotes

UNM coach Bob Davie:
First of all, Boise State is really good and just looking at the game it was what I was most afraid of that we couldn’t cover them. That was the concern coming in. That is still the concern as we stand here now. … It’s a difficult situation when it really doesn’t matter whether it is man or zone. They did a great job of max protecting and keeping a tight end in a lot and not allowing us to create havoc.

I think the disappointment was early on we stopped them on the first series, but then we had two facemask penalties on that second drive and they ended up going down there and scoring. Again we had a lot of defensive penalties in the game. But the bottom line is that we – like a lot of teams they will play – will have a difficult time covering their receivers. If the quarterback and wide receivers stay healthy, they are a handful to defend.

I thought we could move the ball. We played without Teriyon Gipson … and he wanted to play but it wasn’t worth the risk. He couldn’t cut it loose all week. But we could move the ball. We had a difficult time throwing it as well as protecting.

They blew us out. They were definitely the better team and they definitely deserved to win. But I am proud that we outscored them in the second half. I appreciate that very much. I’m very proud of this team. It was about as bad as it could get at halftime at 42-7. We came out in the second half, and for what it worth, we outscored them 14-7. I realized that they took their quarterback and receiver out, but I do appreciate the effort from the players.

Linebacker Dakota Cox
“It was a tough first half. Coming into the locker room after that just felt like the game was going on forever. We just had to regroup and refocus we couldn’t hark on the last half. We really had to go out there a play a good game. Everyone just had to play for pride, play for the name in front of their jersey, and just go out there and play for respect.”

“They had a great scheme coming in. They were able to shut us down using max protection. Seven guys blocking seven guys so it was something that kept them in. When you have a guy like Sperbeck, that can make moves and get open, it makes it very hard to do something on the quarterback – especially when they’re doing that and back off a little bit. I definitely think it paid off in the second half and guys were able to go out there and make some plays. Something we need to focus on is getting better every week, build off this, and not live off this game. We need to go out there, get better, and prepare for Air Force.”

It’s always been kind of our game to go and blitz their quarterback. Every game we go out there and try to do a lot of blitzes. They had great scheme, were stepping up, blocking us, and we were able to kind of just have time to throw it down field. So we starting backing off a little bit and tried to see if it worked well to get more guys dropping and we had some more rushing. It’s just something we need to work on, both phases going into Air Force and the rest of the games this season.”

“I think we definitely need to work on possession time. You ask guys to go down and make plays, the defense to go out there and make plays, and then get off the field. We just support each other out there, especially coming into halftime, we just had to stay together. That’s when the team really came together and understood that we needed to go play a new game out in the second half and just do what we can do. Just do what we can do, and come out there with some pride on ourselves.”

Quarterback Lamar Jordan
“It was hard going in 42-7. I didn’t play well in the first half. I was just rushing a lot of things, just not playing my game, and trying to do too much.”

“The whole point as an offense is to score points. If you don’t, it’s all going to be bad. We just have to be better.”

“Like I said, I played bad. I have to step up and be better for my team.”

“We have to execute better mentally. We just all have to play better.”

“I have to do better and practice a lot better. Help my team. They’re the reason I kept going in the second half. I really have to thank those guys.”

Boise State Quotes

Head Coach, Bryan Harsin
I think the storyline and everything leading up this game was about the defense and really it comes down to that maybe some of your best defense is a good offense, and going out there and putting points on the board against teams that run the football and tonight, that was a part of the game play.

We talked about that as a team, out storyline is ‘go out there and play great offense, get points on the board, don’t have heavy turnovers like we did last year.’ I think about last year’s game, I think it was 14-10 heading into the third quarter; defense played really well last year too, we just kept putting them into tough situations. Then tonight, I thought the defense, offense, everybody, the plan the coaches put together was spot on and the players went out there and executed it and it’s all credit to our players because they went out there and got it done. We got hit on the one long run and then everyone adjusted and then they back there and played really well.

Near the end of the game there we got some backups in there; we don’t want to let them to put points on the board either. You’re always trying to finish the game but we’re also going back and looking at that because we certainly want to finish it out but I’m proud of this team on a short week to come in here and play a team that beat us last year and to come in here and have the performance that we did, that was exciting.

Receiver Cedrick Wilson
All week in film we saw a lot of man coverage with no safety help so we practiced it all week and executed it today.   They were trying to stop Jeremy a lot so their safeties were playing a lot more for a direct game allowing us to play more on the outside.”

Receiver Thomas Sperbeck
We expected a lot of cover zero man, and kind expected them to sit at sticks a lot so we knew if we had the time to throw we could…It’s pretty exciting especially when our scout team does such a good job of giving us those same looks. It’s getting a lot easier for us to see coverages and that they’re showing that it’s coming. I think that our line did a great job tonight also picking that up.
