ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s soccer team wraps up its season 8 p.m. (MST) Friday when the Lobos travel to take on San Diego State.

New Mexico (8-7-3 overall, 4-5-1 Mountain West) is coming off a week where it dropped a 3-0 result on Friday to Wyoming in its home finale before the Lobos bounced back with a 1-0 victory over Colorado State on Sunday in Fort Collins. Gwen Maly scored the Lobos’ goal in the 11th minute and the New Mexico back line led the charge to make it stand. Unfortunately for the Lobos, they needed to win both contests to stay in the hunt for one of the top six positions in the Mountain West to earn a spot into the conference tournament.

Though San Diego State has already clinched a spot in the postseason (and will be hosting the tournament via winning the regular-season title last season), it still has plenty to play for as the Aztecs sit in third place with 21 points in the conference – just a point behind San Jose State for second and two points behind UNLV for first. The top two spots in the conference earn a bye in next week’s MW Tournament.

NOTES HEADING INTO FRIDAY:

  • Though the Lobos are 6-12-7 overall against San Diego State, including 2-7-1 on the road, New Mexico looks to make it two in a row in San Diego. The Lobos defeated the Aztecs 2-1 in 2014 in their last meeting in San Diego – getting the game winner in the 59th minute from Dylann O’Connor set up by an assist from current Lobo senior Ruth Bruciaga.
  • Claire Lynch sits in a tie for fourth place on the UNM all-time goal scoring list with Lana Melendres (1996-99) with 17 goals. Third place in Lobo history is held by Nicole Highfil (1993-95) with 24 goals. Laurie Hegedorn (1994-97) owns the all-time UNM record with 61. Lynch’s eight goals this season has her tied for eighth on the UNM single-season list while her seven career game-winning goals is fourth on the Lobo all-time list.
  • Lobo goalkeeper Tayler Hammack with her shutout Sunday against Colorado State sits tied atop the Mountain West leaders with seven shutouts. The junior is fourth in the conference in saves with 67 and she’s seventh in goals against average at 1.19. Overall, the Lobos lead the Mountain West with eight shutouts.
  • The Lobos sport two of the top 10 goal scorers in the Mountain West this season with Claire Lynch in fourth with eight goals while Maddie Irwin is tied for 10th with five goals. Lily Sender of UNLV leads the conference with 11 goals.
  • The Lobos have a unique weapon of sorts in Alexa Cabrales as the junior defender has three assists this season, all coming from long throw ins from the sideline to in front of the goal.
  • Maddie Irwin with her seven shots against Boise State on Oct. 16 became the ninth player in UNM history to hit the 100-shot mark in their career and now has 108, good for eighth in Lobo history. Her 50 shots taken this season is sixth in the Mountain West. She’s also close to the top 10 in goals scored as her 10 career goals is three behind a three-way tie for 8th in Lobo history.
  • Though the Lobos started the season with seven straight road games, they were welcomed back to Albuquerque in a big way in their home opener as 2,012 people came to UNM Soccer Complex for UNM’s win over New Mexico State on Sept. 16. The Lobos followed that up with strong crowd showings against Colorado College, Air Force, Utah State, Boise State and Wyoming and are averaging a Mountain West-best 1,058 people per game (their 6,348 in total attendance is second in the conference despite having the fewest home games this season in the Mountain West).
  • For at least the sixth-straight season, the Lobo women’s soccer program is in the top 30 in average attendance in the nation – sitting at No. 25 at 1,058.
