COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The University of New Mexico women’s cross country team claimed the top spot in the Mountain West Pre-Championship Women’s Cross Country Coaches’ poll released Wednesday. The Lobo men were tabbed fourth in the men’s midseason poll.
The polls have the seventh-ranked Lobo women extending their streak of eight straight MW cross country championships at Friday’s Mountain West Championships at the Falcon Crest Golf Club in Kuna, Idaho.
The New Mexico women, the preseason and midseason coaches’ favorites, remained in the top spot in the pre-championship poll, while men’s team held steady in the No. 4 position after holding that slot in the preseason and midseason poll.
The men have won six of the last seven league championships.
In the women’s poll, New Mexico tallied 10 of the 11 first-place votes for a total of 100 points to earn the top spot. No. 28 Boise State collected the final first-place votes and 87 points to claim second place.
Air Force earned 81 points for third, followed by Colorado State with 71 points and Wyoming with 67 points. Utah State (56 points), Nevada (46), San José State (34), Fresno State (25), San Diego State (21) and UNLV (17) placed sixth through 11th, respectively.
On the men’s side, the Lobos tallied 28 points total to place fourth. No. 17 Colorado State earned the top spot in the poll with six first-place votes and 48 points, while No. 24 Boise State came in second with a first-place vote and 41 points and No. 28 Air Force ranked third with the final first-place vote and 40 points.
Wyoming (23 points), Utah State (22), San José State (13) and Fresno State (9) rounded out the eight-team poll, placing fifth-to-eighth, respectively.
The 2015 Mountain West Cross Country Championships will be hosted by Boise State at Falcon Crest Golf Club in Kuna, Idaho on Friday, Oct. 28. The women’s six-kilometer race begins at 10 a.m. MT, followed by the men’s eight-kilometer race at 10:45 a.m. MT. Both races can be viewed live on the Mountain West Network.
