FRESNO, Calif. — After rallying from a 1-0 deficit in the first half against San Jose State on the road on Friday for a 3-1 victory, the University of New Mexico women’s soccer team couldn’t find the same answers Sunday against Fresno State as the Lobos fell behind 2-0 in the opening 45 minutes and eventually lost 3-0.
The Lobos (5-5-2 overall, 1-3-0 Mountain West) gave up a pair of goals three minutes apart late in the first half before the Bulldogs (6-5-1, 1-2-1) converted a penalty kick to make the final 3-0.
It was polar opposite of last season’s contest – a game the Lobos won 5-1 in Albuquerque.
The Bulldogs struck first Sunday afternoon when in the 35th minute a corner by Myra Delgadillo was headed in by Marina Kerrache to make it 1-0.
Fresno State tacked on its second goal three minutes later when a cross from Carly Bracken was headed into the bottom left side of the goal by Julia Glaser to push the Bulldog advantage to 2-0.
The Lobos looked as if they may get one back to cut the lead to one when Emily Chavez in the 57th minute struck a beautiful free kick from 40 yards out, but it clanked against the cross bar and went back into play.
Fresno State closed out its scoring a minute later when Delgadillo converted a penalty kick – one that UNM goalkeeper Tayler Hammack got a hand on while diving to her right, but it still rolled in to make the final 3-0.
The Lobos were outshot 21-12, including the Bulldogs taking the first 10 shots of the contest. Fresno State finished with six shots on goal while UNM had four.
Katie Hinman paced the Lobos with two shots – both on goal. Hammack finished with four saves for UNM at goalkeeper.
The Lobos will look to bounce back 7:30 p.m. Friday when they travel to take on Nevada.
Notes: It’s the Lobos’ worst loss since falling to Colorado 4-0 on Aug. 30, 2015 in Boulder, Colorado. … It’s the first time the Lobos fell behind by at least two goals since falling to No. 17 California 2-0 on Aug. 26 – UNM’s second game of the season.
