ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — There will be plenty on the line and plenty to honor Friday night as The University of New Mexico women’s soccer team wraps up its home schedule against Wyoming at UNM Soccer Complex before hitting the road Sunday at Colorado State.
The Lobos (7-6-3 overall, 3-4-1 Mountain West) sit in a tie for seventh place in the Mountain West with Air Force at 10 points. New Mexico trails Friday’s foe Wyoming by two points for the sixth and final spot for the Mountain West Tournament – meaning a win over the Cowgirls would leap frog the Lobos into at least a tie for sixth (however, UNM lost the head-to-head matchup with Air Force as the Falcons own that tiebreaker. Air Force takes on San Jose State and Fresno State this week and ends the season at Colorado College).
Add to Friday that it’s also a celebration of Lobo women’s soccer where UNM will honor its seven seniors prior to the game along with its alumni at halftime and the UNM Soccer Complex will be buzzing.
The Lobos are coming off a strong weekend by defeating Utah State 2-0 on Friday and playing Boise State to a 0-0 draw on Sunday – a pair of teams that entered the weekend in the top three in the conference (with Utah State leading the Mountain West). The Lobos on Friday got a goal from Claire Lynch (assisted by Emily Chavez) and another from Jennifer Munoz (assisted by Olivia Ferrier) to take down the previously first-place Aggies. On Sunday, though the Lobos doubled up Boise State on shots (22-11) and shots on goal (8-4), they couldn’t find the back of the net and tied with the Broncos.
The Cowgirls come to Albuquerque Friday having won four of their previous five matches – including splitting games last week at San Jose State (lost 3-1) and at Fresno State (2-1). Wyoming has scored 11 goals in its last five contests (and hasn’t been shut out over that stretch), pushing the Cowgirls to fourth in the Mountain West with 24 goals in 2016.
Colorado State, which plays at San Diego State on Friday, heads into this week’s play having gone 0-4-1 since the calendar turned to October and is 1-9-2 since starting the season 2-2. However, the Rams have proved dangerous as they tied with Air Force 1-1 on Oct. 9 – a Falcons squad the Lobos lost to 2-1 at home. Also the Rams have done most of their damage at home (where the Lobos will be playing them) as they are 2-3-2 in Fort Collins.

NOTES HEADING INTO FRIDAY:
- The Lobos have experienced all three results against Wyoming in its last three meetings with the Cowgirls. New Mexico tied with Wyoming last season, lost 2-1 in the 2014 Mountain West Tournament and won 2-1 during the 2014 regular season. Overall, the Lobos are 14-6-6 against the Cowgirls and 7-3-2 in Albuquerque – last losing to Wyoming at home in 2009.
- Since Colorado State started its women’s soccer program in 2013, the Lobos haven’t lost to the Rams – a perfect 3-0 with a 2-1 win in 2015 on the road, a 1-0 win in 2014 in Albuquerque and a 3-0 win on the road in 2013.
- With her goal Friday, Claire Lynch moved into a tie for fourth place on the UNM all-time goal scoring list with Lana Melendres (1996-99) with 17 goals. Third place in Lobo history is held by Nicole Highfil (1993-95) with 24 goals. Laurie Hegedorn (1994-97) owns the all-time UNM record with 61. Lynch’s eight goals this season has her tied for eighth on the UNM single-season list while her seven career game-winning goals is fourth on the Lobo all-time list.
- Lobo goalkeeper Tayler Hammack with her two shutouts last week now sits atop the Mountain West with six shutouts. The junior is fourth in the conference in saves with 60 and she’s seventh in goals against average at 1.13.
- The Lobos sport two of the top 10 goal scorers in the Mountain West this season with Claire Lynch tied for second in the conference with eight goals while Maddie Irwin is tied for eighth with five goals. Lily Sender of UNLV leads the conference with 10 goals.
- Maddie Irwin with her seven shots against Boise State on Sunday became the ninth player in UNM history to hit the 100 shots mark in their career – hitting it exactly at 100. Her 42 shots taken this season is tied for sixth in the Mountain West. She’s also close to reaching the top 10 in goals scored as her 10 career goals is three behind a three-way tie for 8th in Lobo history.
- Though the Lobos started the season with seven straight road games, they were welcomed back to Albuquerque in a big way in their home opener as 2,012 people came to UNM Soccer Complex for UNM’s win over New Mexico State on Sept. 16. The Lobos followed that up with strong crowd showings against Colorado College, Air Force, Utah State and Boise State and are averaging a Mountain West-best 1,067 people per game (their 5,337 in total attendance is second in the conference despite having the fewest home games this season in the Mountain West thus far with five).
- For the fourth time this season the Lobos took 20 or more shots in a game when they racked up 22 against Boise State on Sunday. It’s tied for the second most for the Lobos this season, only behind the 38 the Lobos took against New Mexico State on Sept. 16 – which is tied for a season high in the conference this season.
