ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — First year head coach Ben Dunbar has tabbed former Baylor volunteer assistant coach Robin Goodman as assistant coach for the UNM men’s tennis program.
Said Goodman of coming to UNM, “I’m very happy to have joined the Lobo Tennis family. I’m excited to get started and help develop a dedicated, hardworking culture to facilitate success in the classroom and on the court.” Goodman certainly has a track record of that.
In his two seasons with Baylor, Goodman assistant Baylor head coach Matt Knoll, helping the Bears to the NCAA Tournament twice, including an appearance in the NCAA Championship semifinals. Baylor ended the 2015 season ranked No. 3, its highest ranking since 2005, when Baylor was No. 2 in the country.
“I am very excited to announce the addition of Robin Goodman to the Lobo Tennis family. He joins us from Baylor where he spent two years as the volunteer assistant, coached the No. 1 ranked player in the country and coached in an NCAA Final Four,” said Dunbar. “He also had an impressive playing career at Drake. Having spoken extensively with Robin I believe our philosophies on creating a successful college tennis team are very similar and we are excited to build towards our goals. Robin is a big asset to the program and I look forward to working with him in the years to come to elevate this program to lofty heights.”
That top player was Baylor’s Julian Lenz, who was ranked No. 1 in 2015, and finished ranked No. 4 in 2015 and No. 12 in 2016.
Before joining the Baylor staff, Goodman spent four seasons in Des Moines, Iowa, as a member of the Drake men’s tennis program. He racked up 111 career singles wins. He was a two-time All-Missouri Valley Conference selection and three-time All-Missouri Valley Player of the Week his senior year. Goodman was a two-time first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete award winner and finished with the fifth most career victories in program history.
The addition of Goodman gives UNM two youthful coaches, with Dunbar graduating in 2012 and Goodman in 2014. That youthfulness certainly will yield positives as far as Dunbar is concerned.
“We are a young coaching staff, but we are energetic and we will pay attention to details. I know we will get the most out of every day and push our student-athletes towards the big goals that we have for the program,” said Dunbar.
Goodman graduated in May of 2014 from Drake University with a degree in business management. He is from Cambridge, England.
