ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s soccer team looks to get back on track on the road this week as the Lobos travel to take on San Jose State on Friday and Fresno State on Sunday.

The Lobos (4-4-2 overall, 0-2-0 Mountain West) had their six-match unbeaten streak snapped Friday in a 1-0 loss to Colorado College at home in their Mountain West opener. The Tigers scored 20 seconds into the match and UNM never found the equalizer.

UNM followed it up with a strong effort against Air Force on Sunday, but after Claire Lynch tied the game in the 72nd minute on a penalty kick – the Falcons scored on a free kick from 40 yards out 10 minutes later to claim the 2-1 victory and drop the Lobos to 0-2-0 in conference play.

The Lobos will be looking to avenge last season’s Mountain West Tournament semifinal loss to San Jose State when UNM fell to the Spartans in penalty kicks. SJSU went on to win the Mountain West Tournament title. In fact, each of the last three matchups have gone to overtime between UNM and the Spartans (the Lobos are 0-1-2 in those contests). Overall, UNM is 1-3-2 against SJSU with that win coming in 2013 at home.

UNM will follow that matchup with a Sunday contest against Fresno State, a team the Lobos haven’t lost to since the Bulldogs joined the Mountain West in 2012 (3-0-1). This includes last season’s 5-1 win over Fresno State – the most goals the Lobos had scored since racking up seven against TCU in 2011. Overall, UNM is 3-2-1 against Fresno State with those two losses coming in 2004 (4-2) and 1996 (1-0).

NOTES HEADING INTO FRIDAY:

  • With Sunday’s goal, Claire Lynch moved into a tie for seventh place on the Lobo all-time goal list with 13 – tying the junior with Lyndsey Guice (2012-15), Zaneta Wyne (2008-11) and Dani Rangel (1993-97). One more goal will tie her for fifth and three more will tie her for fourth. Laurie Hegedorn (1994-97) owns the all-time UNM record with 61.
  • The Spartans head into Friday’s matchup with New Mexico unbeaten in their last five contests (3-0-2), including winning their first two Mountain West games on the road at UNLV (2-1 on Friday) and at Nevada (3-1 on Sunday). SJSU leads the Mountain West in goals against average by a wide margin and are 21st in the nation at 0.54 – nearly half a goal better than Nevada, which is second in the MW at 0.99.
  • Fresno State had its five-match winning streak heading into Mountain West play snapped when the Bulldogs lost to Nevada 1-0 on Friday and UNLV 4-1 on Saturday. It’s been a season of streaks for Fresno State as it opened the season on a three-game losing skid before following it up with the five-game winning streak and now a two-game losing skid. While the Bulldogs are tied for third in the Mountain West with 15 goals (along with New Mexico), they are tied for last in the conference with 19 goals allowed.
  • Heading into Sunday’s matchup with Air Force, the Lobos were 4-0-2 when leading an opponent in shots during the course of a game. However, despite outshooting the Falcons 15-12 on Sunday – the Lobos fell 2-1.
  • Senior midfielder Maddie Irwin and junior midfielder/forward Claire Lynch are each in the top 10 in the Mountain West in goals as each have four goals – good for a tie for fifth in the conference. The duo are two back of the Mountain West leader – Lily Sender of UNLV.
  • UNM goalkeeper Tayler Hammack has been busy early in the season as the junior is second in the Mountain West with 43 saves (4.3 per game). Her three shutouts this season is tied for fourth in the conference. Hammack has played all but 16 minutes this season at keeper for the Lobos.
  • Though the Lobos started the season with seven straight road games, they were welcomed back to Albuquerque in a big way in their home opener as 2,012 people came to UNM Soccer Complex for UNM’s win over New Mexico State on Sept. 16. The Lobos followed that up with strong crowd showings against Colorado College and Air Force and are averaging a Mountain West-best 1,226 people per game (their 3,678 in total attendance is second in the conference despite being tied for the fewest home games this season).
