The camps will be run by the state of New Mexico’s all-time winningest coach in Ray Birmingham, who is entering his 10th season at the helm of the Lobos – leading UNM to the NCAA postseason in five of the last seven years. Birmingham has 30 years of collegiate head coaching experience overall and shares a wealth of knowledge to baseball students of all ages.
Fellow instructors at the camps will be Ken Jacome (UNM assistant coach entering his 13th year with the Lobos and 21st overall in coaching collegiate baseball who is in charge of the pitching staff), Buddy Gouldsmith (UNM assistant coach entering his second year and was previously the head coach at UNLV and an assistant coach with Nevada and Tulane. Gouldsmith works with the Lobo offense and coordinates recruiting) and Tony Cappuccilli (UNM assistant coach entering his third year with the Lobos who works with catchers and Lobo hitters).
The purpose of the Lobo Baseball Camps is to provide instruction for youth players from ages 6-18 and to expose them to the fundamentals of the game – taught by an experienced coaching staff. Older players will have the opportunity to play in front of college coaches while gaining a better understanding of what is expected of them if they want to play baseball at the next level.
The camps will be held at Santa Ana Star Field – the University of New Mexico baseball team’s field that is located on the west side of University Blvd, just south of WisePies Arena.
