ALBUQUERUQE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico’s Lady Lobos Fall season opener, The Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational, was cut short today due to inclement weather. The weather delay began at 5:02 p.m. MT and play was officially cancelled at 6:10 p.m. MT.
Teams have between six and three holes left to play in order to wrap up the second eighteen on the day. Play is set to resume tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. MT, followed promptly by third round play.
As for UNM’s performance on the day, the team currently sits in tenth place overall at 8-over 487 (299-188*), seven shots off eighth place.
“I think maybe we were a little too excited, maybe a little too apprehensive… I’m very happy with how a few of them finished their first rounds.” Opened tenth year head coach Jill Trujillo.
Consistency was the name of the game through UNM’s opening round, with no player shooting higher than 4-over. Darian Zachek posted the most birdies on the day with four coming in the final seven holes, with teammate Alexandra Moisand trailing close behind, notching three total birdies on the day’s opening 18.
Manon Mollé is thus far is the low Lobo, at 1-over 120 (75-45*) overall. Mollé closed her opening round with birdies on two of the last three. She then carried her momentum over to the day’s second round, firing off three consecutive birdies on holes 1-3. At the time of the delay, Mollé had most recently parred the par-4 12th.
A trio of Lobos find themselves in a ten-way tie for 40th at 2-over overall.
Ingrid Gutierrez (76-45*) is 2-under on her second eighteen of the day, posting three birdies on holes 1-9 to begin this afternoon’s play. Darian Zachek (74-42*) is even par through 29 reported holes, overall she’s had six birdies on the day. While Eva Saulnier (73-49*) rounds out the trio, Saulnier is 1-over on her afternoon round, and has tallied four birdies on the day while competing as an individual.
Trujillo continued on stating:
“We just really have to stay in the present tomorrow… we need to hit our next shot and put a good roll on those putters.”
Alexandra Moisand (74-56*) finds herself in a seven-way tie for 50th at 3-over thus far in the tournament. Despite seven total birdies on the day, Moisand struggled opening up the day and has been fighting to get back into position. With four holes left to play, two are par-5’s presenting birdie opportunities when considered in tandum with the wet course conditions.
Katerina Jaeger’s (76-56*) day was a struggle, she currently sits in a six way tie for 84th.
Two remaining Lobos, in Emma Edwards and Kalyn Thayer, are competing as individuals and find themselves T82 and T84 respectively.
“Staying patient, staying in the moment, that’s what our mantra is.” Trujillo concluded.
As for the rest of the field, Oklahoma State opened the day with a team score of 14-under 274, highlighted by Linnea Johansson’s 6-under 66. When play was suspended, the Cowboys were two-over for the afternoon campaign.
Two shots off Oklahoma State’s lead are the Sun Devils of Arizona State. At the time of suspension of play ASU had the lowest on-course round, at 6-under through 12-13 holes of play.
Baylor (-8), Colorado (-6), and Northwestern (-2) round out the field’s top-5 day one performers.
The day was stolen by Colorado senior Esther Lee, who managed to do something Monday that only one women’s college golfer had done before, card a 61.
The 11-under mark ties Stanford’s Mariah Stackhouse, the 2014 NCAA Individual Champion, for the lowest individual 18-hole mark in NCAA women’s golf history.
Lee’s round was bogey-free, and included three stretches of three-consecutive birdies. Lee shot a 7-under 29 to enter the clubhouse, and the record books.
The score is the new tournament record at UNM’s Championship Course on the womens side. Tim Herron shot a 62 in the 1992 William H. Tucker Invitational, and holds the mens scoring record.
* The second round is delayed due to inclement weather.
