GAME NOTES

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Last season The University of New Mexico women’s soccer team opened the season by hosting two ranked opponents in No. 1 Florida State and No. 15 Texas Tech, falling in close contests to both.

It won’t be much easier in 2016 as the Lobos begin the season on the road at No. 19 Texas and No. 18 California – starting with the Red Raiders on Friday in Lubbock (UNM plays California on Aug. 26).

The Lobos are coming off of a 2-1 exhibition win over Eastern New Mexico on Sunday at the UNM Soccer Complex, getting a game-winning goal with 18 seconds left from Aleksandra Mihailovic (assisted by Avadney Osbourne). UNM also got a goal from Brooke Webster in the 21st minute (assisted by Isabella Jimenez) to take a 1-0 lead on the Greyhounds. Overall, UNM outshot ENMU 28-4 in the contest.

UNM went 10-8-2 in head coach Heather Dyche’s first season at the helm in 2015, making her the third coach in program history to win 10-plus games in their inaugural season. The Lobos were also 7-3-1 in Mountain West play, taking third place and making it to the semifinals of the conference tournament.

About Friday’s Contest:

  • The Lobos are 7-10-5 in their history in season openers, including last season’s 3-1 loss to top-ranked Florida State in Albuquerque. UNM is looking for its first win in a season opener since 2010 when the Lobos defeated Montana, 7-0. UNM is 0-3-2 in season openers since that win – which includes a 1-0 loss to Texas Tech in the Lobos’ 2013 season opener.
  • UNM enters Friday’s contest 4-4-1 all-time against Texas Tech, including 1-1-0 in Lubbock. The Lobos have dropped their last three contests against the Red Raiders (2015, 2013, 2012) and last defeated Texas Tech on Sept. 4, 2004 (5-0), in Albuquerque. UNM’s last win in Lubbock came in 1997, a 3-1 victory to open the season. This will be the third time UNM has opened the season against Texas Tech, more than any other opponent in program history.
  • The last time the Lobos and Red Raiders met was last season (Aug. 23) at the UNM Soccer Complex with UNM dropping a close contest to No. 15 Texas Tech, 1-0. The Lobos outshot the Red Raiders 15-11 (both teams had four shots on goal), but couldn’t break through.
  • The 2016 Lobos will have plenty of home-grown talent on the roster as 14 players are from New Mexico. Ten of those players are from the Albuquerque area while two are from Farmington and one each are from Carlsbad and Tucumcari. It’s not only the players that have New Mexico ties as head coach Heather Dyche is an Albuquerque Eldorado High School graduate and assistant coach Paul Maestas is a Lobo grad and a former high school, state-title winning coach at Eldorado High School.
