FLASH-AGENCY.NET – Former University of New Mexico women’s basketball standout Khadijah Shumpert has signed a professional contract to play overseas with the Panathlitikos Sykeon in Thessaloniki, Greece.
“This is a phenomenal opportunity,” said Shumpert. “And I am excited to not only see another part of the world, but to be doing something I love there.”
Shumpert is the second Lobo to sign a professional contract in two years. Last summer, former Lobo guard Antiesha Brown signed to play with Milan’s Paddy Power Sesto San Giovanni in Milan, Italy.
Shumpert is also not the only Lobo to go to Greece and play professionally. Current women’s basketball Director of Operations Vera Jo Bustos spent the 2011-12 season playing for the Apollon Kalamarias in Thessaloniki.
The Minnesota native averaged 14.8 ppg for the Lobos in her senior season. She brought down 6.0 rebounds per game and shot a team-best of 51.7 percent from the field. Shumpert was named to the Mountain West All-Tournament Team, All-MW Defensive Team and All-MW Honorable Mention. She became the 14th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points and 500 rebounds.
