ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico head men’s tennis coach Bart Scott has announced that Lawrence Perrin from Great Britian has signed an NLI and will join the Lobo Men’s Tennis team for the 2016-17 season.
Perrin joins a team that returns its entire nine-man lineup from last season that saw UNM miss the NCAA Tournament after making it as an at-large in 2015, despite being nationally ranked for most of the season. Perrin, who entered 2016 with an ITF ranking of 176, has tremendous international experience, playing tournaments not only in Great Britian, but in Qatar, Cypress, Israel, Tunisia, Turkey and China.
At the Nazmi Bari Cup in Istanbul, Perrin won five matches, getting all the way to the finals. He lost just one set on the way to that championship match, that was one of four championship matches he made it to in the 2015 calendar year. It’s that type of tournament experience that that should get Perrin ready for Mountain West play, and that’s a fact that sits very well with Scott.
“We are so happy to have Lawrence and his family join us and become Lobos for life,” said Scott. “He’s an accomplished international player who will help us immediately in both singles and doubles. He’s a high character student-athlete who will excel in the classroom and on the court.”
For the right-handed Perrin, he becomes the fifth international student-athlete on the roster that includes five players from the Mountain Region, including three New Mexicans. However, it was the atmosphere with the other student-athletes and staff that sealed the deal.
“When I visited UNM I immediately felt a great family bond between the players and coaches which is what I was looking for in my search for a university,” said Perrin, who will enter UNM as a freshman. “Speaking to Coach Scott and Coach (Ben) Dunbar, I felt that they really wanted me to be a part of the Lobo family, giving me a sense of belonging. I’m very grateful for this great opportunity and look forward to starting my new adventure in the Fall.”
