ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico softball team hit three home runs but it wasn’t enough as it fell to San Diego State Friday 23-4 at the Lobo Softball Field.
San Diego State scored eight runs in the top of the first inning. The Lobos tried to catch up in the bottom of the inning as junior Michala Erickson hit a solo shot to right field. Senior Mariah Rimmer followed with an infield single. Junior Jasmine Casados then jacked a shot over the center field wall, cutting the Aztec lead to 8-3.
The Aztecs took a 9-3 lead in the second and shutout the Lobos in the bottom of the inning. More runs continued to come across as they scored four in the third and shutout the Lobos on offense again that inning. 10 runs in the fourth capped the scoring for the Aztecs.
The only other run that came across for the Lobos was in the fourth as freshman Jade Gray blasted her third home run of the season to right center.
Casados led the Lobos at the plate with a 2-for-2 effort and two RBI. Four other Lobos each had a hit for a total of six hits.
In the circle, junior Tess McPherson suffered the loss, dropping to 4-2 on the season. She allowed six runs off five hits. She was pulled as senior Lisa Rodrigues came in relief. Rodrigues allowed 17 runs, 15 earned, off 23 hits in five innings of work.
The Lobos drop to 22-23 on the season and 7-11 in the Mountain West. San Diego State improves to 27-20 overall and 9-10 in conference play. The two meet again tomorrow at 1 p.m.
