RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – Nine teams, 54 holes, one Mountain West Champion. After three rounds of competition, the Lobos finished in fifth place overall, earning a 50-over score of 914 (299-312-303). New Mexico lead the field in Pars scored with 177.
“We only had 15 birdies total for three days and that just doesn’t cut it,” said Lobo head coach Jill Trujillo.
The Mountain West crowned a new champion today as the UNLV Rebels posted a par-even score of 288 in round three. The Rebels tallied a three round total score of 877 (+13), nine strokes ahead of the field. This is the Rebels’ first Conference title since 2013, which was also the first time the MW Championship was played at Mission Hills.
The reigning champions, San Diego State, finished in second with a team score of 886 (+22). This was the Aztecs third top three finish at the Mountain West Women’s Golf Championship in three years. Fresno State dropped to third with a score of 897 (+33) over the three rounds of play.
UNLV junior, Alexandra Kaui, earned her first individual MW championship, using a third-round 69 (-3) to secure the victory. Kaui, who recorded a 54-hole total of 4-under 212 (72-71-69), is the first individual medalist to come from the team champion since 2012. This was also the Rebels first individual champion since 2011.
Five strokes separated Kaui from runner up Katrina Prendergast (71-73-73), a freshman from Colorado State, who carded a 1-over par 217 total. This was the best Conference championship finish by a Rams golfer since 2011. San Diego State, sophomore Milagros Chaves, finished in third with a 2-over score of 218 (75-74-69).
For the Lobos, Manon Molle’, Eva Saulnier, and Darian Zachek all finished tied for 21st place with scores of 230 (+14). Ingrid Gutierrez finished tied for 27th at 231 (+15) and Alexandra Moisand finished tied for 30th at 233 (+17).
NCAA regional bids will be announced Monday, April 25, on The Golf Channel at 6 p.m. ET. This year’s regional sites are Stanford, California, Bryan, Texas, Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Shoal Creek, Alabama.
