RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – After round one of the Mountain West Championships, the New Mexico Lobos currently sit in fourth place overall with a team score of 299 (+11). Only four strokes off the lead, the Lobos are in a good position to move up the leaderboard.
“We held it together fairly well today,” said Lobo head coach Jill Trujillo. “We need to make some improvements tomorrow to get us back in there.”
“The course is playing a lot tougher than last year,” Trujillo admitted. “The rough is up high but the greens are rolling extremely nice.”
Atop the team leaderboard is UNLV with a round-one score of 295 (+7). One stroke behind is defending Mountain West Champions, San Diego State, with a team score of 296 (+8). The Rebels and the Aztecs currently lead the nine team field in birdies with 14 apiece. Fresno State sits in third place at 297 (+9).
Three golfers, representing three different teams, remain tied for first place with scores of 71 (-1) after round one of competition. Among the leaders are Katrina Prendergast of Colorado State, Gudrun Bjorgvinsdottir of Fresno State, and Georgia Lacey of San Diego State.
Leading the charge for the Lobos was junior, Alexandra Moisand. Moisand was two-under through 11 holes until a double-bogey cost her on the 12th hole; however, Moisand quickly regained her composure and played steady for the remainder of the round to finish with a par-even score of 72. She is currently one stroke back from the lead and sits tied for fourth place overall. Moisand had three birdies on the day and currently leads the field in Par 3 Scoring at two-under.
“I think today went great,” Moisand smiled. “Tomorrow I’m just going to come back and tell myself it’s a new round.”
Another notable round-one performance was that of New Mexico freshman, Darian Zachek. Zachek played steady the entire day, sinking three birdies and carding a 74 (+2) to put her in 10th place overall.
“We just need to keep it together tomorrow and take it a little lower,” Trujillo noted.
