Lobos Roll Through UTEP for Fifth Straight Win

Emily O.Emily O.

EL PASO, Texas  — The roll continues.

The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team, ranked No. 53 and undefeated in the Mountain West, rolled to a 4-1 road victory over UTEP, giving the squad its fifth consecutive win, and its seven in its last eight meetings.

UNM, the defending Mountain West Tournament champion, looks to be peaking at the right time, and the team gets zero rest as it will put its five-match winning streak on the line against WAC champion New Mexico State in Las Cruces in a Rio Grande Rivalry match tomorrow at 10 a.m.

UNM got off to a quick start by sweeping the doubles point.  Emily Olivier and Dominque Dulski picked up a stress-free 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles, and that was quickly followed at No. 3 doubles by Sharon Coone and Ludivine Burguiere who needed to win a tiebreak at 7-2 to clinch the point.

From there, it went to singles, and UTEP briefly tied the match when Vivienne Kulicke grabbed a straight set 6-3, 6-1 win over Olivier, but that would be the only bright spot for UTEP.  Sharon Coone blitzed Maria Paula Medina 6-0, 6-2, using four breaks to earn the win and make it 2-1 New Mexico.

Andrea LeBlanc didn’t have it quite as easy, but still had a solid 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles, and then left it at 3-1, with the other three singles matches in a third set.  UNM ended it when Dulski ended her match first, coming back from a rough first set for a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 win.

“Credit to UTEP for a very competitive match,” said head coach Kelcy McKenna.  “The girls did a great job of battling tough conditions and stayed solid from the start of doubles to the end of singles.  We are looking forward to tomorrow against NMSU.”

NOTES:  Burguire and Rachana Bhat had both of their singles matches end unfinished … those two are a combined 39-8 this year, and 22-4 in the Spring dual season.
